Chef Profile: Levi Roots

We are super excited to let you know our worst kept secret. We have teamed up with the amazing, Dragon Slaying,  Levi Roots to bring a selection of exclusive Reggae Reggae recipes to the Plate Up app. From burgers to curries, Levi’s Caribbean-inspired recipes are sure to impress this summer!

These dishes are simple to prepare but packed with flavor. We had so much preparing and, importantly, devouring these dishes with Levi in our kitchen.

So what are you waiting for? Check the recipes displayed on the side to see what we have on offer!

We absolutely love Levi’s story, from his Reggae Reggae sauce to his extensive charity work, and we want to share a snapshot with you:

The beginning of Levi's tale takes place in a little village in Clarendon, Jamaica where Levi aided his grandmother in the kitchen when he was a little child. She imparted to him the subtleties and secrets of blending herbs, spices, and flavours from the Caribbean. Levi made his musical discovery during this time at the church where his grandmother sang.

He later moved to London, UK and at the 1991 Notting Hill Carnival, Levi opened the "Rasta'raunt," which became so well-liked that it is now a yearly staple at Carnival. He did this by fusing the cuisine he was cooking with the music he was playing.

Levi, AKA the Dragon Slayer, rose to fame after appearing as one of the contestants on the BBC's Dragon's Den, where he won a £50,000 investment from multi-millionaire investors, Peter Jones and Richard Farleigh, for his Caribbean Reggae Reggae sauce.

Levi has appeared in many shows besides BBC’s Dragon’s Den such as The Caribbean Food Made Easy TV series, which Levi hosted in 2008 and was based on his well-known book of the same name, aimed to increase accessibility to the colourful flavours and nutritious components of Caribbean cuisine. He even has a movie coming out called Levi Roots: The movie which will be about his early life in Jamaica and his journey of success.

The Levi Roots range continues to grow with Caribbean inspired cooking sauces, ready meals, soft drinks, desserts and more. With his current status as a British businessman, television personality and musician, Levi's success has been nothing short of a whirlwind.

Beyond Food!

Having gotten to know Levi and his amazing right hand lady, Maria Barrows over the past few months, we can attest that Levi, quietly, gives back to his and many other communities across the UK. The philanthropist in Levi visits hundreds of schools, universities and prisons every year. Levi is also a proud ambassador of The Prince’s Trust.

For that, Levi, we salute you!
