José Pizzaro is a chef and author. His journey began when he was faced with an incredibly difficult decision concerning the fate of his career: should he be a dentist or follow his passion for food? In the end, he had to leave his love for dentistry at the kitchen door.

Chef profile: José Pizarro | Plate Up

He is originally from a western region of Spain, Extremadura but has now lived in London for over 20 years, developing his craft. Often referred to as the Godfather of Spanish cooking in the UK. He spent much of his early career working for top restaurants in Spain, experiences which later gave him the opportunity to become head chef at Michelin star El Mesón de Doña Filo restaurant. When coming to the UK, José worked with some of the most esteemed Spanish restaurants such as Eyre Brothers, Brindisa and Gaudi.

José eventually opened his own restaurant, José Tapas Bar on Bermondsey Street. José Tapas Bar is a cosy establishment inspired by Barcelona's best tapas bars. The daily menu is determined by the fresh products available on the market, and it also provides over 50 different Spanish wines and sherries to complement the food.

José’s Pizzaro Restaurant opened just a few months after his first, also on Bermondsey Street. The restaurant went on to earn several awards including ‘World Food Awards Restaurant of the Year’, ‘Best Mediterranean Establishment at The Food Awards London’, ‘Food and Travel Magazine’s Best Newcomer of the Year’ and ‘Best Restaurant of the Year and lots more’.

In fact, José Pizarro was named one of the "100 Espaoles" - a tremendously important honour that recognises the best 100 Spaniards from throughout the world based on how they have taken their abilities to the public and demonstrated their Spanish culture and appreciation of the nation through their work.

Due to his numerous successes José launched two further openings: José Pizarro at Broadgate Circle and pop-up restaurant Little José in Canary Wharf both based in London. Though his most recent project has been the opening of The Swan Inn in Esher where he combines a classic British pub feel with his family home cooking.

José is the author of 5 cookbooks. His latest being Andalusia, a book which showcases his love for basque cuisine. Though there will soon be a new arrival, The Spanish Home Kitchen: Simple, Seasonal Recipes and Memories from My Home which will be out in May 2022.

José feels that tapas is for everyone, and that home chefs shouldn't be intimidated by the prospect of preparing a variety of meals — it's all about preparation and keeping things simple. José takes satisfaction in improving on classic Spanish tastes and cuisines. Jose's charisma, excitement, and devotion for Spanish food, along with his philosophy of simplicity, have resulted in Jose participating on some of our beloved culinary TV shows such as BBC 1’s Saturday Kitchen, Sunday Brunch, James Martin's Saturday Morning, and Rick Stein’s Christmas.
